This study examines means of improving efficiency of the transportation portion of the export wheat handling system in the southern Plains. Analysis focuses on the feasibility of restructuring grain handling facilities to accommodate unit train movements to port locations. To accomplish this, a cost-minimizing network flow model was developed. Results show that the alternative transportation systems would have substantial effects on costs, wheat flow patterns and the economic variability of certain members of the grain handling and storage industry. |

The breeding of Pacific oysters Crassostra gigas, in non tidal ponds, before commercialization, brings about an improvement of the shell and of the quantity and quality of the tissues. In fact, the Berthome's indice (1978) moves from 1.36 in June to 0.68 December, and the density of the shell increases in the same time from 1.79 to 1.98. On the other hand, the percentage of tissues in the oyster is 12.4% at the end of gametogenesis and more than 9% at the end of breeding. The dry tissues are composed of 10.3 of ash, 40.3% of proteins, 12.6% of lipids and 9% of carbohydrate. 95% of the carbohydrate are glycogen. The resulting energetic values are measured to 5.10 cal-mg super(-1) of dry tissues ash free. |

Within the strongly migmatized axial zone of the Hesperian massif in western Galicia a graben-like structure has been distinguished, characterized essentially by the presence of non-migmatic rocks that comprise orthogneisses with blastomylonitic textures, leucocratic gneisses, plagioclase-blastbearing paragneisses, pelitic schists, and numerous amphibolitic layers and lenses. In the southern and central part of the graben and at the borders in the north the majority of the amphibolites are metamorphosed mafic dike swarms that intruded in the Early Palaeozoic after the emplacement of biotite granites but before the intrusion of subalkaline and peralkaline granites. Few amphibolites are of sedimentary origin. The other amphibolitic rocks in the north are of... |

Four new hyporheic water mites, belonging to the genera Neomamersa, Protolimnesia and Mixdea, are described from a river in Haiti. Species belonging to the latter two genera are distinct enough to necessitate erecting the new subgenera Voldroguella and Tubomixdea. Nymphs belonging to Rhyncholimnochares and Omartacarus were collected as well as Xenomomonia subcentrata, the latter previously described from Cuba. |

A new stygobiont genus of Isopoda Cirolanidae, Haitilana, with two new species, H. radicicola and H. acanthura, are described from groundwaters in Haiti. These are the first hypogean cirolanids recorded from the island of Hispaniola. The new genus is mainly characterized by its pleon segmentation, the clearly prehensile first pereiopods and weakly prehensile second and third pereiopods, and the 2- and 5- segmented pedunculus of antennae 1 and 2, respectively. Haitilana shows the greatest morphological resemblance to Antrolana lira Bowman, 1964, from the Appalachian Valley, Virginia, U.S.A. The localities where Haitilana was found, have been flooded by the sea during the Cenozoic. Regression seems to be the most plausible explanation for the evolution of... |

Dixon Hill Lighthouse Cave, about 800 m (0.5 miles) inshore on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, was found to hold populations of three sponge species new to science, viz. Pellina penicilliformis n. sp., Prosuberites geracei n. sp., and Cinachyra subterranea n. sp. The new species are described and figured, and compared with Caribbean congeneric species. The geological history of the cave is described and its implication for ideas on speciation rates in sponges is discussed. |

The diagnosis of a family of groundwater Amphipoda, the Bogidiellidae, is revised. Based on a cladistic analysis, the former genus Bogidiella is subdivided. In its present conception, the Bogidiellidae comprise eleven named genera, seven subgenera, and 50 named species, whereas several other taxa remain unnamed. These are distributed over all major continents (except Antarctica), and some oceanic islands. This distribution pattern is presumably due to at least two major vicariant processes: the breakup of Pangaea in the Mesozoic and the geological regression movements in the Tertiary. A number of West Indian taxa is described, including four new species. |

The first known eyeless phreatic elmid beetle, Anommatelmis botosaneanui n. gen., n. sp., is described. In addition, a second new phreatic genus with two new species with reduced eyes, Lemalelmis minyops and Lemalelmis fontana, is described. Habitus views, illustrations of various structures of taxonomic interest, habitat descriptions, discussion of relationships, and a discussion of the interesting plastron present on all three species are included. These new beetles were collected from wells or karst springs in Haiti. |

The absolute and relative risk aversion characteristics of a large sample of farm operators were estimated from the observed portfolio responses to changes in wealth. Regression estimates suggest that farm operators display decreasing absolute risk aversion. Relative risk aversion varies by type of farm. However, the definition of risky assets has an important bearing on relative risk aversion characteristics. Non-wealth variables are also important in explaining the holding of risky assets by farm operators. |

An electrophoretical and immunological study is made of nine species of pycnogonids, representing seven families, from the Catalan coast. An electrophoretogram of each species is given and the antigenic properties of its protein bands are determined. Taking as comparative basis the serological affinities of the different species with Ammothella longipes and by morphological considerations as well, five major evolutionary lines have been established. The Nymphonidae are considered the more primitive. The Ammotheidae — Tanystylidae are considered a central group by their greater number of protein bands and their greater capacity of morphological diversification. The Phoxichilidiidae-Endeidae are considered intermediate between the former and the... |
